Profession recruits: teacher for judicial protection of youth

The news is terrible. There have been a lot of dramatic news stories involving teenagers in recent weeks. Long before the Prime Minister’s statements about the need for greater firmness towards young people, officials at the Place Vendôme had already launched a major recruitment campaign for teachers at PJJ who understood the judicial protection of young people. More than 200 positions will be filled this year, underpinning the central judicial function offered to offenders so that they can avoid the often negative spiral and can reintegrate, as far as possible, into society.

Therefore, the role of the PJJ teacher is critical and requires in-depth training. “It is done in rotation, with a large part of the field. We mix theory and practice for 46 weeks,” says Magali Leger, coach of the Ile-de-France and overseas territorial center. These people have the status of civil service trainees and are paid €1,800 during their training. (count €3,500 net at the end of your career). »

After 18 months of training, a rating is compiled that allows the future teacher to choose a job anywhere in France based on available vacancies. The specialist clarifies: “We must not forget that we intervene within a limited framework, following a legal decision. It is deeply ingrained in our identity that we are called to provide social and educational support to children, adolescents and families. Indeed, education is at the core of our business. »

Patience and creativity are two of the most important qualities to best supervise minors. “Patience because we have to constantly create connection with these teenagers who are breaking up, and creativity because we intervene where others have failed before us,” adds Magali Léger. Therefore, the future teacher must have great adaptability qualities in a broad sense. The young people he meets are either at home, in custody or out in the open.

“We have several roles: to inform about court decisions (some teachers work in court), but also to carry out important educational work in the field of school education, guiding them into professional fields in which they can flourish. This is a multidisciplinary profession. This requires general thinking as well as the ability to work in a team,” admits Bathilde Gros, territorial director of PJJ des Yvelines.

Individual work

Yoann Resplandi, a teacher at a collective educational institution in Aubergenville (Yvelines), was captivated by this profession: “What makes me happiest? I see that in all the time I spend with one or more young people, the personal situation(s) are progressing. We must be patient, constantly exchange, discuss and listen to what they tell us, and then try to convince them of the benefits of pursuing a particular project. We make decisions together with families and legal guardians. »

Therefore, the educator multiplies initiatives aimed at bringing these young people out of their environment and offering structuring activities that will then allow them to see the future differently. A bike ride for a few days can be an opportunity to discuss safety, health, road safety, a horse riding project, work on animal mediation, organize an Olympics, focus work on overcoming obstacles. myself.

“We must allow these young people to gradually return to their family of origin, host family or worker’s home. Therefore, the teacher performs individual work, everything is individual. Today at PJJ the missions are very diverse, the teams have very different backgrounds and therefore a wealth of knowledge,” says Bathilde Gros. “We have several profiles in promotions. Both people who have previously worked in one or more jobs, as well as young people graduating from a university of psychology, law or pedagogical sciences with a bachelor’s degree +3. Such diversity gives a lot. Above all, it is a profession that is constantly evolving, just like our society,” concludes Magali Léger.
