Autonomous vehicles: a robotaxi arrives, a separate car glides…

The autonomous vehicle has its own network with six layers of “automated and autonomous driving.” This extends from level 0 (without any driving assistance) to level 5, the final stage in which the car will be fully autonomous in all situations and without an operator on board. In short, the Holy Grail. At level 5, you can watch a movie or even sleep while letting the vehicle take you to your destination.

Manufacturers today tend to be slow to reach Level 3, which is within technological reach, but it is synonymous with a whole host of potential complications as the responsibility shifts from the driver… to the manufacturer. So they stick to level 2 for the most part.

Renault is thus “focusing its efforts on Level 2 or even 2+”, the group claims, with numerous driving aids such as contextual cruise control, lane keeping assist or, soon, an automatic shut-off function.

“The Renault Group does not consider achieving Level 3 a short-term priority,” the manufacturer suggests. Too expensive, few clients. And those who have the means, such as the customers of the Alpine sports brand, remain tied to the fact… holding the steering wheel and handling it!

Tesla will release its autonomous taxi by the end of 2025

This famous Level 3, where the car must be able to operate safely in challenging conditions with limited driver control, has nevertheless been achieved by Mercedes with its S-Class and its 100% electric version called the EQS.

As for taxis, robotaxis, that is, autonomous ones, are in starting blocks. In an upcoming note, France Strategie, an organization associated with Matignon, highlights the benefits of robotaxis.

American Tesla is due to present its 100% autonomous model on August 8. Elon Musk’s firm wants to start production at the end of 2025, with first deliveries starting next year. China is even more advanced. There, robotaxis and autonomous shuttles are already in commercial operation in six cities.
