Hotel nights plummet 84% despite a 17% drop in price

According to INE data, hotels received 1.1 million travelers

The collapse of tourism was visibly noticeable in the middle of the second wave, in the month of November, when nights in hotels fell 84% compared to last year. With half of Spain with restrictions on mobility, hotel establishments received only 1.1 million travelers, with a total of 2.8 million nights recorded, compared to 18 million overnight stays last year in the same period.

Reservations, executed and average stay fell, which was down 11.3% compared to a year ago, standing at 2.4 nights per traveler. This, despite the fact that prices have fallen 17.4. So far this year (only December remains to be computed), overnight stays have fallen by 72.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The situation for the hotel sector is critical, as many establishments closed in August, when the second wave began, thus ending the season. Many have also ended Christmas, because the number of open establishments decreased in November compared to October, going from 10,597 to 8,189. They represent 38.7% less than in November 2019. The total number of places offered is 603,082, 45.0% of the total available.

Those who keep active is thanks to travelers residing in Spain, who number more than 900,000 in the aforementioned month, compared to 256,412 non-residents. The main destination for travelers residing in Spain is Comunidad de Madrid, with 303,498 overnight stays, representing 17.0% of the total, and the Canary Islands is the autonomous community most visited by non-resident travelers, where

they made 611,016 overnight stays (57.6% of the total).
