Three million Basque, the local currency, in circulation in the Basque Country

Eusko, the local currency of the Basque Country, is attracting more and more users. The leading regional currency in Europe passed the three million units mark in circulation at the beginning of November. They have been converted to Euskos since their launch in 2013, explains South West. 4,000 individuals and 1,200 professionals use the alternative currency created “for a more ecological, Basque country and united”, we can read on the dedicated Twitter account.

The Euskal Moneta association, at the origin of Eusko, expressed its gratitude to its users on Tuesday on the social network. “If more than 5 years were necessary to reach the first million Euskos in circulation, only three years made it possible to put into circulation the next two million”, welcomed the persons in charge of the currency on their Internet site.

A mobile app and a payment card

Basque banknotes have been available since the appearance of the currency, but it was subsequently also available in a dematerialized version. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, it is thus possible to pay with the euskokart payment card or the euskopay mobile app.

These new methods partly explain the enthusiasm for buying Basque. The phenomenon also affects automatically programmed monthly conversions, which reached a total of 150,000 euskos.
