He Govern has given the green light this Tuesday to the preliminary memory of the draft bill for the creation of the Catalan Space Agency, promoted by the Department of Digital Policies who leads Jordi Puigneró, within the framework of the so-called NewSpace Strategy.

The creation of the Catalan Space Agency responds to the need to have a legal framework and an administrative structure to manage and deploy the application of policies and actions in this field in Catalonia, the Generalitat reported in a statement: “The Agency will implement the national economic development policy of space and will be the entity of reference for public and private agents in everything related to the space sector in the country “.

The NewSpace Strategy was approved by the Executive last October “to promote a new economic sector with high added value that generates opportunities, economic growth and employment” through the use of smaller satellites and lower cost that orbit at low altitude (nanosatà © lites).

Thanks to this strategy, a legal framework will be available that will help both the consumption of new data services by the public sector and the incorporation of companies and more critical mass to the NewSpace sector, “with the aim that generate positive effects on GDP, be a source of employment and allow the development of new knowledge “, reported the Generalitat.

The Government announced that its plans were to invest 2.5 million euros to create, this year, a space agency and put into orbit two first nano-satellites, dedicated to improving connectivity and observing the Earth, within the framework of a strategy that seeks to promote a new economic sector and generate 1,200 jobs. The Generalitat plans to inject total resources of 18 million of euros in four years, reports Efe. The future of the project, however, will be conditioned by the next regional elections, scheduled for February 14.
