The exchange rate was trading lower on Wednesday at Mexico due to the appreciation of the peso in a day with a low volume of business due to the holiday period at the end of the year, while analysts were still attentive to news about the rapid spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Today the price of the dollar stood at 20.7698 pesos in Mexico, a lower level of 0.15% compared to the reference price of the previous day, according to Reuters data.

In an analysis note, Monex Grupo Financiero pointed out that, contrary to previous news, the Ómicron variant presents a high contagion rate.

“Specialists are evaluating whether this variant will have effects like those generated by delta in previous months,” he said.

In fact, states around the world have tightened restrictions on social mobility and called on citizens to get vaccinated, while Ómicron is emerging as the dominant strain of the virus, which has made reopening plans fail.

On the other hand, the Mexican Stock Exchange (BVM) was operating with marginal losses on Wednesday. The benchmark S & P / BMV IPC index, made up of the shares of the 35 issuers with the highest value by capitalization and liquidity in the Mexican market, fell -0.11% to a level of 52,026.61 points at 11:41 local time.
