The dollar in Venezuela it was operating down, according to DolarToday, amid the announcement by the United States that it would review its sanctions against the oil country if the dialogue advances.

At the opening, the dollar stood at 4.80 digital bolivars in the informal market in Venezuela, a decline of 0.41% compared to 4.82 the previous day, according to data from the portal DolarToday.

The United States assured on Thursday that it could review its policy of pressure and sanctions against Venezuela if President Nicolás Maduro and the political opposition resume the talks that abruptly broke off in October and move forward with tangible results.

The solution to the situation in Venezuela is not in Washington”, said Juan González, director of the National Security Council for the Western Hemisphere, in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. “We have made it very clear that the United States is willing to ease sanctions pressure based on results at the dialogue table.”.

González’s statements take place a few days after three months have passed since the Caracas government decided to interrupt the dialogue with the opposition that it was carrying out in Mexico City in retaliation for the extradition of Colombian businessman Alex Saab, one of his allies and considered by Washington as a key witness in corruption cases against Venezuela that are aired in Miami and other cities in the country.

Saab, who was extradited from Cape Verde to the United States, was appointed by Caracas as a diplomat in those negotiations. The Venezuelan government is believed to have conducted multiple allegedly corrupt deals with him. His extradition further strained relations between the two countries, and in response, Caracas returned six US oil executives who were under house arrest to prison.

Gonzalez’s statements also come days after the victory of the opposition for governor in the home state of the late former president Hugo Chavez, Barinas. Sergio Garrido defeated former Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza there, in whose campaign senior officials from the ruling party participated in an attempt to maintain control in that Chavista stronghold.
