After Joe Rogan, Neil Young attacks Daniel Ek, the boss of Spotify

In his fight against Spotify, Neil Young has stepped up a gear. After pulling his music from the music streaming service, due to the platform’s ties to antivax podcaster Joe Rogan, the folk legend has decided to take on company boss Daniel Ek this time around.

“To the musicians and creators of this world, I say this: you have to be able to find a better place than Spotify to host your art. To Spotify employees, I say Daniel Ek is your problem – not Joe Rogan. Ek pulls the strings. Leave this place before it devours your soul. Ek’s stated goals are about numbers – not art, not creativity,” the singer posted in a post on his official website.

Go, Boomers!

Two weeks after Neil Young’s departure from Spotify, other artists have removed their content from the platform, such as Joni Mitchell, India Arie, or podcasters Brené Brown and Roxane Gay, and many musicians have taken advantage of the bad buzz surrounding the company to call for a boycott. Among the most recurrent criticisms, we find in particular the remuneration of artists, considered to be very largely insufficient.

Since the beginning of the year (even before the movement provoked by Neil Young), Spotify’s stock price had started to fall, and according to the LA Timesit has lost 25% since the beginning of the year.

For the moment, Spotify has announced, through its president, that nothing will change in its policy towards content creators such as Joe Rogan.

Neil Young thinks, however, that with the help of baby boomers, it is possible to make things happen. “To baby boomers, I say that 70% of the financial assets of your country are in your hands, compared to only 5% for millennials. You and I must take the lead. In the age of climate chaos, I say get rid of corporations that are contributing to the massive destruction of the Earth by fossil fuels. Then be free and take the right path,” he concluded in his message.
