The Cannes Film Festival confirms paying tribute to the career of Tom Cruise

It’s now official: Top Gun: Maverick will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 and its star, Tom Cruise, will be at the heart of the celebrations. The sequel to the cult film had been postponed several times due to the pandemic, but the feature film is ready to make its arrival in style with its main actor on the Croisette.

“The Cannes Film Festival will pay him an exceptional tribute for his entire career. During this special day, Tom Cruise will engage in the exercise of a conversation with the journalist Didier Allouch in the afternoon and will climb the steps the same evening on the occasion of the screening of Top Gun: Maverickdirected by Joseph Kosinski,” the Festival announced on its official website.

never came

This will only be the American superstar’s second visit to the Cannes Film Festival. Tom Cruise came for the first time in 1992 to present Distant Horizons and awarding the Palme d’or to Bille August. Since then, he had never again ventured on the steps of the Palais des Festivals.

First slated for release in 2019, Top Gun 2 had been pushed back to summer 2020, but the pandemic had caused a series of chaotic schedule changes: announced in December 2020, then in July 2021, before being rescheduled in November 2021, then finally on its official date of May 25 2022. It will therefore have taken three years to find the ideal date (according to the studios). A trifle next to the 30 years during which Tom Cruise was absent from the Cannes Film Festival.
