“Hamlet”, the play starring actors with down syndrome is invited to tour Europe

In 2019, a risky staging won praise from the public and critics. Although it was the many times versioned “Hamlet”, this time the play took on a new and necessary meaning in the voices of seven actors with Down syndrome and one with an intellectual disability. Taking as a starting point the existential question: to be or not to be?, each of the protagonists had the courage to stand on a platform and share their reflections, desires and frustrations in a world where respect for minorities is daily the great absent. Now, three years after the premiere of this theatrical piece, a new opportunity opens the way for the cast made up of Álvaro Toledo, Octavio Bernaza, Diana Gutiérrez, Jaime Cruz, Ximena Rodríguez, Manuel García, Cristina León Barandiarán and Lucas Demarchi, directed by Chela de Ferrari: exploring new scenarios on a tour of Spain. So far they are confirmed theaters in Madrid, Barcelona, Galicia and Alicante. The Canary Islands and Poland are also places where this testimonial work could take place.

solidarity request

Although the travel expenses of the actors and part of the team are covered thanks to the invitations from the National Dramatic Center of Spain and the organizers of the Grec festivals, Fresca! and Mit de Rivadavia, the production producers estimate that At least S/100,000 is needed to cover the costs of additional tickets, extra luggage for clothing or props, and the days of stay for 16 people, between one invitation and another. With the amount that is expected to be raised, it is also planned to conclude the documentary “Hamlet” -winner of the Dafo award from the Ministry of Culture-, after a year of recording rehearsals and performances. If things go well, the premiere of the film would arrive in 2024 and the film record of the montage would be included, which has two inclusive versions, one for people with hearing disabilities and another for those with visual disabilities.

The five-week trip is scheduled for June 11 and the first performance in Spain would be on the 15th, in the city of Madrid. But before leaving for Europe, at the end of May, there will be two performances of the play that will help raise funds for the tour. Help for this group of talented and brave young people can also be made effective with donations in the two accounts set up for this purpose. As a thank you, those who collaborate will be provided with a link to access the film of the work, their names will appear in the credits of the farewell functions and photos and reviews of the trip will be sent to them. Solidarity with this cause is the prize that these actors deserve.
