Martina Portocarrero, interpreter of “Flor de retama”, died at the age of 72

The folk singer Martina Portocarrero died at the age of 72, according to her relatives and the interpreter Manuelcha Pradowho expressed through social networks remembered the most popular songs to which he gave voice throughout his career.

“We express our deep regret for the departure of Martina Portocarrero, a great interpreter of popular song. With a social and political emotion proven in tireless days in the valleys, punas and mountains of our beloved Peru”, he wrote in the early hours of Saturday, April 23.

“Martina aroused deep emotions in the people through heartfelt and emblematic musical works such as ‘Maíz’, ‘Flor de retama’, ‘El Hombre’, ‘Mamacha de las Mercedes’, ‘Carita de manzana’, among others”recalled the singer-songwriter.

According to La República, the relatives of Martina Portocarrero confirmed the departure of the folk singer-songwriter on April 22 that she was fighting lung cancer that had afflicted her since December last year.

In an interview given to El Popular on February 15, the artist from Ayacucho confirmed that she was fighting this disease and that she was evaluating whether to remain in treatment in Switzerland or Peru.

This Friday, April 22, her relatives confirmed the death of the Ayacucho artist, who had been fighting lung cancer since December 2021.

Martina Portocarrero sought to be a candidate for Congress for the Peru Libre political party in the last general elections of 2021, but the National Elections Jury (JNE) separated her from the contest. Later, she announced the creation of the Mundo Verde Cultural Political Party, which also spoke out for the death of the singer.
