“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”: The return of the strangest doctor

If the latest Spider-Man movie proved anything, it is that joining one saga with another, even if both are not set in the same “reality”, is profitable: the box office benefits and so do the fans. Quite apart from the debate over whether it is a good thing to give people what they want, the trend will continue. For example, the Flash hero tape (DC Comics) recovers Michael Keaton’s Batman. As for Marvel, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” promises in its trailers a connection with characters from other universes and franchises.

Set after “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the film follows sorcerer Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who moves between one reality and another. Worlds similar to his own where there are alternate versions of himself and other heroes. For example, the trailers show a long-haired, ponytailed Doctor Strange, as well as a zombie sorcerer.

In this adventure, Strange meets América Chávez (Xochitl Gomez), a teenage heroine capable of traveling between one universe and another. “She is 14 years old, younger than any of the comic book versions, so we have a new introduction. And it was fun to read the comics, because I loved her right away,” Gomez said at a round table attended by El Comercio. The film also brings back Wong (Benedict Wong), the new Sorcerer Supreme. “It’s always gratifying to come back as this character, especially for someone who has been collecting these comics from a very young age. Being in the MCU is a real dream for me.”, indicated the actor.

Also returning is Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), the Scarlet Witch, who after losing the family she created based on magic in the “WandaVision” series, has to help Strange. Is she an ally or an enemy? Another mystery.

The creators of this film are careful not to reveal details that could ruin the surprises. However, promotional materials have given clues about the “cameos”, as is the case of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), mutant leader in the films of the “X-Men” saga and whose voice is heard in one of the trailers. This participation may occur because in 2019 Disney (owner of Marvel) acquired 20th Century Fox for more than US $ 70,000 million. Without a doubt, a film where anything can happen.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is currently in theaters, while “WandaVision” is available on Disney+.
