“Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi”: What happened to Darth Vader after his duel in “Episode III”?

The fans of “starwars” are more than excited for the release of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on Disney+, a series that serves as a bridge between the prequels and the original trilogy and brings back performers like Ewan McGregor, in the role of the titular character, and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader.

The return of the latter is of particular interest, since the character is not only considered one of the most memorable villains in fiction, but also because his past has been a subject of fascination for fans of the franchise for decades. It is so much so that books, comics, video games and others have been written around the figure of Darth Vader. However, most of this literature was left out of the canon after “Star Wars” was acquired by Disney in 2012. Since then the ‘house of the mouse’ has been careful to release new fiction set in ‘a galaxy far, far away’, although these have not been few.

The figure of Darth Vader has been popular especially in the time span from Episode III to IV, which will also explore “Obi-Wan Kenobi”. But those are not the only adventures that the corrupt Anakin Skywalker experienced. In particular, within the canonical fiction that has Darth Vader as the protagonist, we focus on three examples: a comic book, a novel and a video game.

It should be noted that the events of the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series occur in the year 9 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) of the Galactic Calendar, with the year 0 being the date that marks the destruction of the first Death Star.

WARNING, THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS NOTE

Darth Vader (2017)

Written by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli, this comic book series published by Marvel Comics is perhaps the best canon source for what happened to Darth Vader after his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Spanning 25 volumes and set between the years 19 and 12 BBY, the saga follows Darth Vader as he hunts down the remnants of the Jedi order under the command of Darth Sidious. The series is of particular importance as it presents in depth the relationship between the Sith lord and the Inquisitorius, the order of Dark Force users who will serve as antagonists in the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series.

This saga features Darth Vader’s duel against the mighty Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a, his search for the Chief Librarian of the Jedi Archives, Jocasta Nu; and the conquest of the aquatic planet Mon Cala, where remnants of the order banded together to resist the advance of the Galactic Empire. In this last undertaking, Vader found a great rival in Ferren Barr, a former Padawan. In the last story of this part of the saga, Vader chooses the planet of Mustafar, the site of his defeat by Obi-Wan, to build his fortress.

These comics have been published by Planeta.

“Star Wars: The Sith Lords” (2016)

Written by Paul S. Kemp, this novel is set in 14 BBY, the novel focuses on Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine as they become trapped on the inhospitable planet Ryloth, hunted by the Cham rebels Syndulla and Isval.

As you might expect given the history of the series, the plan ultimately fails, though it does serve as an interesting look at the relationship between apprentice and master of the Sith. The novel is also available in Spanish through Planeta Comics.

“Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” (2019)

One of the most recent productions related to “Star Wars” – and one of the favorites of the author of this note – is this Respawn Entertainment game for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Set in the year 14 BBY, the story follows Padawan Cal Kestis, who after spending years in hiding from the forces of the Galactic Empire, is discovered by the Inquisitors. What follows is a frantic adventure in which the protagonist, aided by former Jedi Cere Junda and pilot Greez Dritus, seek to keep a file containing the names of all Force-sensitive children in the Galaxy out of the Sith’s reach. .

On the story side, this video game offers one of the closest looks at how the Inquisitorius works, as well as the tactics this order uses to corrupt Jedi and convince them to betray their friends.

But since we are talking about Darth Vader here, his appearance occurs late in the game, in the fortress of the Inquisitorius on the moon Nur. The villain interrupts a duel between Cal and the Second Sister. Despite the increasing power of the protagonist, they fail to face the lord of the sith and the best they can do is escape with their lives.
