“Insidious” on Netflix: the chronological (and alternative) order of the horror saga

We have all seen some horror movie that has had us on the verge of fright. Either because they make good use of the resource “jump scare” (jump from fright, in Spanish), because they show grotesque images or because we were very small and easy to scare – the latter is an excuse that many of us use, to be honest. A saga that fulfills this task is that of “insidious” or “The night of the devil”, whose four deliveries are in Netflix.

The series consists of four films: “Insidious” (2010), “Insidious: Chapter 2″ (2013), “Insidious: Chapter 3″ (2015), and “Insidious: The Last Key” (2018). The first two were directed by James Wan, known for having worked on “Saw” (2004) and “The Conjuring” (2013). The third was in charge of Leigh Whannell, who is also the screenwriter of the saga. Finally, Adam Robitel was in charge of the direction in the last installment.

As is often the case with many sagas, the order in which feature films are released does not necessarily correspond to the chronological structure that the story follows. For this reason, here we recommend a possible order to see these films full of ghosts, demons, trips to other dimensions and a medium with great abilities. All available in streaming.

“Insidious: Chapter 3″ (2015)

Available on Netflix

This tape narrates events that occurred before the Lambert case, which is presented in chapters 1 and 2. Here the story of Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), whose mother, Lilith, recently died, is told. The teenager believes her mother tried to contact her from the spirit world, so she seeks out Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), a medium of hers. An important twist occurs when the young woman confesses that she had tried to contact her on her behalf. “If you call a dead man, everyone will hear you”, warns the lady.

After reading, Quinn begins to hear strange noises during the night and will notice more paranormal events that disturb her. From knocks on the walls, bells that ring alone, to a demonic figure that seems to chase the protagonist.

Her father, Sean (played by Dermont Mulroney), will seek help from Elise, who after an attempt to solve the situation and risk death, gives up. Next, they contact a couple of bloggers interested in the topic: Specs and Tucker. With renewed energy and a clear goal: to save Quinn, Elise returns and joins the young ghost hunters to face the creature that trapped the protagonist.

The medium will enter the spiritual realm, which she calls The Furtherwill face a series of demonic obstacles to try to save the teenager and will put his extrasensory abilities to the test.

“Insidious: The Last Key″ (2018)

Available on Netflix

This feature film takes us into the story of the medium Elise. She started with her from her childhood, when she lived in New Mexico with her parents Audrey and Gerald, and her younger brother Christian. It is at her house that she discovers her powers to see ghosts and demon spirits. Following a tragedy that befalls the Rainier family, Elise is shown decades later, working as a paranormal investigator alongside her colleagues Specs and Tucker.

She is summoned by a man named Ted Garza because paranormal activity has been experienced at his home. Realizing that he lives in her childhood home, she decides to help him and thus confront her own story.

The plot portrays an important encounter: Elise meets Melissa and Imogen, daughters of her younger brother, who holds a grudge against her for having abandoned him with their abusive father. Here it is discovered that Mr. Garza is a great threat and they confront him.

Another important point is that Imogen reveals that she has abilities very similar to those of Elise and they enter together to The Further. Together they will seek to save Melissa, who is the victim of a demonic specter obsessed with collecting souls.

This film makes a little nod to the Lambert case, narrated in “Insidious: Chapter 1″, but don’t worry, we won’t tell you what happens.

“Insidious: Chapter 1″ (2010)

Available on Netflix and Prime Video

Just at this point we recommend seeing the first installment of the “Insidious” saga. The protagonists of this story are Renai (Rose Byrne) and Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), a couple who moved to a new house with their three children. One of them, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), confesses that there is something disturbing in his bedroom, so he is afraid to be there. One day, under strange circumstances, Dalton falls from a staircase and is left in an apparent and inexplicable coma.

Upon Dalton’s return home, still unawakened, Renai believes her house is haunted as she begins to hear and see sinister intruders. For this reason, the family moves to a new house, although these paranormal events occur again in a more violent way.

Seeking help, Josh’s mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) contacts her friend Elise, the well-known paranormal expert. She will explain the nature of the supposed coma Dalton is in and the importance of saving him from that “sleep” as soon as possible. Josh, a skeptic, ends up accepting the team’s intervention after discovering clues left by his son.

Elise, along with her two assistants, will enter The Further to find Dalton, without success. There an important secret is revealed: Josh has extrasensory abilities that, as a child, put him in danger, but that now will be necessary if he wants to recover his family from him.

Josh Lambert is one of the main characters in the first film. He is played by Patrick Wilson, known for his participation in the saga "The Conjuring", where he plays the role of Ed Warren, the famous investigator of paranormal phenomena. (Photo: Amazon Prime Video)

“Insidious: Chapter 2″ (2013)

Available on Netflix

After the events of the first tape, “Insidious: Chapter 2” shows us that Josh and Renai moved, along with their children, to Lorraine’s house, hoping to forget the dark past and start a new life. But, what seems to be something hopeful turns out to be sinister. The family again experiences strange visions and threatening phenomena, which are related to the spirit world.

Josh’s past is explained here and how it relates to the special abilities the man has since his childhood. It also shows how Lorraine came to contact Elise, in search of a solution for the entity that terrifies her son.

At present, Renai begins to suspect her husband, since she notices strange attitudes, as if he were a creature out of this world. For her part, Lorraine seeks the help of an old colleague of Elise’s, Carl, and asks for his help fearing that the family’s odyssey in the paranormal dimension is not quite over.
