Jessica Newton and her balance of Miss Universe: the role of Alessia, the personal interview, the “sabotage” and more

In addition to the change of ownership and renewed rules, the characteristics that are sought in a Miss Universe have also varied and evolved. Jessica Newton, director of the Miss Peru Organization, assures that she will choose her next queen based on these new requirements. From Miami, she tells us about her work with a view to the election of Miss Peru 2023 and the performance of Alessia Rovegno in the international contest.

They have been days of intense work. Alessia has done a magnificent role, I am very happy with the results. She had an incredible arrival with the people, many national directors and international fans had her as queen or finalist. That Peru is next to Colombia in a Top 16 for me is a great achievement, you returned us to the topNewton points out. Saenz.

─What are you going to take into account for the preparation of the Peruvian candidates for next year?

Let’s focus on the theme of the catwalk. As they have repeated so many times in this new edition, they want a fresh catwalk, where the woman who is competing shines. We will also prioritize the personal interview, because I think that from now on the contest will focus on that. They are looking for a current woman, who is within generation Z.

─ Will physical beauty also be important?

In fact it is taken into account, although we all have different perceptions of beauty. We cannot deny that the five finalists in Miss Universe were gorgeous, but I think that the life story, knowing who each one of them is, is also decisive. The first change will be that the girls do not compete to be queens but to be the face of the Peruvian or international contest and ambassadors of the brand throughout the world.

─In the next edition of Miss Universe, married women with children will be able to participate. Do you agree with this new provision?

There are many women who get pregnant or get married very young and have always dreamed of representing their country in Miss Universe. In fact, getting married or being a mother should not be an obstacle to fulfilling a dream; however, I believe, and I have been categorical in this, that for a pregnant woman the most important thing must be the health of the child.

─Why didn’t Alessia wear the dress selected for the pageant? Is it true that someone broke it?

It was a little torn, but I don’t think the suit added or detracted from anything at all. Alessia qualified and shone all over the world in a year where the competition was very tough. Despite the horrifying attacks and bullying she received, she never misbehaved or got depressed or victimized herself.

─During the competition, his shoes were also lost and the wings of his typical costume were broken, so there is talk of sabotage.

I don’t think there was sabotage because these things always happen in beauty pageants and Alessia handled them very well.

─Why weren’t you by his side during the competition?

Unfortunately they prohibited all interaction between the directors and the queens because a candidate got Covid, so we could only coordinate by phone. I couldn’t even enter rehearsals, except on the day of the final contest. It didn’t matter if I was in China or in another country because we only communicated through video calls. Thank God, Alessia is a totally organized girl, we were connected from the time she woke up until she went to sleep.

─What do you have to say about the criticism of Alessia’s performance in the contest?

I am very sad to see that the Colombian who ranked in the Top 16 just like Alessia, was filled with praise and positive comments in her country. Instead, our compatriot was horribly bullied. How many people dare to do things and are willing to put up with such bullying? I assure you very few. Alessia never gave up and competed with her heart. I am very proud of her and the beautiful family she has for her, who always supported her.

─What did you think of the election of R’Bonney Gabriel, Miss United States, as Miss Universe?

I loved. She was very focused on the contest, she looked very natural, she was one of my favorites.
