Timø, the Colombian band that arrived in Lima ready to “conquer the planet”

“I want to go out and conquer the planet, without asking for permission and without asking for forgiveness,” says the chorus of the song with which the Colombian group Timo opens their first album, a 16-track album in which they sing about stories of love, heartbreak and friendship with happy endings and others not so happy, but in which they always maintain a positive energy that is their best cover letter.

“We like to compose in a group, write in the morning, with calm vibes and I feel that in some way our songs are also impregnated with that. As sad as some of the lyrics are, they end up reflecting that friendship and that good vibe that we have between us,” says Felipe Galat, one of the members of this trio that was formed in 2018 in the halls of a university’s music faculty. from Bogota.

Galat studied composition together with Alejandro Ochoa, while Andrés Vásquez, the third member of the group, specialized in bass as a jazz musician. The day to day in the first academic week began to make them closer and also their similar musical tastes in which several rock stars such as John Mayer and The Eagles stand out.

“The solo from ‘Hotel California’ was one of the songs that made me learn to play the guitar”, confesses ‘Alejo’, who, like his bandmates, really enjoys when they have to give live shows and can demonstrate that skill of trained musicians that differentiates them from other current pop proposals.

“We are proud of our concerts. We leave labels aside and we make a song like ‘Mirror, mirror’ a rock version and ‘Tierra lejana’ we put a progressive rock at the end. Live we do everything and that makes us very happy and when you do things with love, people take it in a very gratifying way”, explains ‘Andy’.

First time in Lima

Timø will offer a concert in Lima on May 20, but they decided to visit the city a month before to promote their new songs, as they have already done in several cities in Mexico, another country where they are playing more and more frequently.

“That there was a person who liked our music and who connected with what we were doing was already significant, knowing that it grows and grows and that there are people in other countries to whom our music has communicated something blows our minds. Traveling the world with our music is the dream we all had. We didn’t think it could happen this way or that it would be so fast, but we are very grateful”, says ‘Alejo’.

Another dream that they have been able to fulfill with this album is to collaborate with artists they admired and who, by joining them in the recording sessions, contributed to the final versions of the songs touches they did not imagine, as happened with Jorge Villamizar from the group Bacilos.

“Jorge was in Bogotá and, purely by coincidence, he agreed to do a songwriting session with us. He arrived, we talked for like 2 hours and we became friends. When we started writing, the song came out too fast, because so many ideas flowed. Initially, the song was not intended for Bacilos to put together, but Jorge felt very related to the lyrics and he really liked how it turned out and we recorded ‘Salvavidas’, in a very organic way”, explained Felipe, who is called ‘Pepa’ by his colleagues. ‘.

For “Conquistar el planeta”, the song they recorded with Andrés Cépeda, the process was different. Timø had already written the song and they thought that the voice of the interpreter of “Besos usados” would be perfect. “We invited his manager to one of our concerts, we insisted a lot and we sowed the seed because we felt that this song was perfect to sing with him. We almost had the song finished and we were about to send it to Spotify, when our manager calls us and tells us: ‘Andrés Cépeda set himself up’. And it was crazy for us because we had been imagining that collaboration for a long time”, Felipe recalls of the main theme of the album that they decided to call “Estemos donde estamos”.

On the one hand, the album’s title reflects his desire to always be close to his audience: “Time will pass, many situations will happen because that’s life and roads, no matter how close they feel, sometimes they will separate, but this title is like saying we are for you wherever we are”, sums up ‘Andy’; but on the other hand it also reflects his desire to stay close to his family.

“That is the challenge. Work every day and seek to fulfill that dream of being able to fill stadiums one day, because beyond having songs at number 1, our biggest dream is to be able to give great shows, but I feel that the challenge is to remain pure, human and close. with the people you love today, because as time goes on there will be fewer people who love you for who you really are and not for any interest involved”, says ‘Andy’, who envisions an ideal future in which “15 years from now, we can fill a stadium, but we still have our families and those people who make us feel at home.”

Besides…
