Who is the young Peruvian who triumphs on Broadway and who is already being compared to Juan Diego Flórez?

When I was a child, I stood out in school artistic presentations, however, what I was most passionate about was sport, soccer. He always played, but he knew that he couldn’t be a professional footballer. Nothing excited me. When I got to the third year of high school, I got frustrated, I didn’t know what to study. At that moment, a drama teacher arrived. She told me that she was possibly trying to do something that wasn’t for me, that I was good at acting. that was the beginning”, relates the Peruvian artist.

After studying acting for four years at the Florida School of the Arts, the young talent continued to grow artistically at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

At school in Florida I started writing and producing my own work. I graduated in May 2022, then moved to North Carolina, where I did an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. It is called “Romeo and Juliet Limeño”. It is the story of two Peruvian families who have restaurants and compete. One is very traditional, and the other is fusion cuisine. Then I went to New York, and now we’re on Broadway”, he says pleased.

of the flower He assures that the passion and energy that he puts into dancing and his interpretations are in his blood, they have a Peruvian seal. “They come from Peru, from the music my family listened to, from the way we celebrated the holidays. I linked my culture to my work in the theater, I added Peruvian wealth”, he nods.

Before coming to Broadway, the national artist held more than 170 auditions for different projects. In almost all of them he was rejected. “You have to be prepared for the ‘no’s”, he emphasizes. “In my last year of school I started working with an agent and auditioning for different projects since October last year.“, account.

Dream fulfilled

Matías De la Flor is among the group of actors and singers from “Camelot”, where -he assures- they compare their artistic talent with that of the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez.

It is very nice to be compared to Juan Diego Flórez, whom I greatly admire, because he is a great talent, pride of Peru. Really, I don’t feel deserving of so much”, he agrees. “We do more than eight shows a week, at night, and we rehearse during the day. It’s intense, but when you do what you love, you’re happy. Getting to Broadway was my dream, I feel like I’m in the World Cup“, Add.

“Getting here has not been easy, I had to fight against myself, against my own thoughts. At first I doubted that I would make it, I thought that I had no talent. But I was constant, I faced my fears, and I began to trust. The work of Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of the Broadway musicals ‘In the Heights’ and ‘Hamilton’, inspired me. He is too talented. I know this is just beginning for me, I want to handle every sector I can, and not just as an actor, but also as a writer, producer and director. Doing bilingual jobs is very important for my plans, I want to teach the American people Spanish, and that they understand not only the language, but also the passion of the Latino”, he underlines.
