After a successful international tour, La Plaza announces the revival of “Hamlet”, a recontra libre version. The play written and directed by Chela De Ferrari, inspired by the classic by William Shakespeare, and starring a cast of actors with Down syndrome, will have a brief season from April 6 to May 2 as part of the celebration for the 20 years of La Plaza theater.
De Ferrari and his cast return to the country to captivate the public as in 2019. Octavio Bernaza, Jaime Cruz, Lucas Demarchi, Manuel García, Diana Gutiérrez, Cristina León Barandiarán, Ximena Rodríguez and Álvaro Toledo return –with more experience– to connect the stories of their lives with Shakespeare’s texts.
“To be or not to be?” is the question asked by the seven actors with Down syndrome and an actress with a cognitive disability who make up the cast. They take the stage to share their desires and frustrations through the encounter between their experiences and one of the most emblematic classics of Western theater.
The play is a weave between Shakespeare’s themes and characters, and the lives of the actors; and it takes as its starting point the question that it asks us in the face of existence: What does “being” mean for people who do not have spaces to participate in society?
It should be noted that the attached direction and dramaturgy advice of “Hamlet”, free recontra version, is in charge of Jonathan Oliveros, Claudia Tangoa and Luis Alberto León. To see it you must buy tickets at laplaza.com.pe.
While the play tours different cities in Latin America and Europe, Chela De Ferrari prepares the edition of her first documentary film “Ser Hamlet”, which will tell the actors’ experiences during the creative process of the play and the discoveries that this generates in their lives.
