The historical drama “Jeanne du Barry” with Johnny Depp will open the Cannes Film Festival

The historical drama “Jeanne du Barry” will be the film in charge of opening the next Cannes Film Festival, on May 16, according to what the organization of the event reported on Wednesday. The film deals with the “life, rise and fall of the favorite of King Louis XV”, interpreted by Maïwenn herself “along with Johnny DeppBenjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory and India Hair”, detailed the Festival in a statement.

Maïwenn, director, screenwriter, actress and producer, shot her first feature film, “Pardonnez-moi”, in 2006, and “Jeanne du Barry” is her sixth feature film.

“His cinema is already imbued with a certain reality, freely drawing inspiration from his own life to shape his characters and their plots. The search for identity, self-construction and family in the broadest sense are at the center of his work”, highlighted the Festival.

“In 2011, the director won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her first selection in Competition, for the film Polisse. Four years later, she returned to the Official Selection with ‘Mon Roi’ (2015), for which Emmanuelle Bercot won the Best Actress Award, ”adds the message.

Johnny Depp, for his part, plays the French monarch Louis XV.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place between May 16 and 27 and the films in the official competition will be revealed on April 13 at a press conference in Paris.

The Festival has already confirmed that it will feature the screening of “Killers of the Flower Moon”, by Martin Scorseseand the new installment of the saga of Indiana Jones.
