What is the theme of the Met Gala 2023?

Lagerfeld (1933-2019) said that fashion was not art, nor was a museum the place for garments, but both the representatives of the met cAs figures close to the designer agreed that he would have been pleased today to see his nearly 200 spectacular creations that the show brings together, grouped by aesthetic theme.

One of those people was the curator of the exhibition and the Met Fashion Institute, Andrew Bolton, who described Lagerfeld as a “scholarly designer” with a commercial vision who ended up becoming the prototype of “fashion entrepreneur” for the time. contemporary.

A DESIGNER IN “UNIFORM”

This is suggested by the journey through the couturier’s almost 70-year career, which reflects his interests in cinema, art or philosophy through dichotomies such as “masculine-feminine”, “rococo-classical”, “historical-futuristic”. or “figurative-abstract” and that ends up offering a “satirical” profile of him.

In each gallery, majestic dresses shine, most of them worthy of the red carpet, with luxurious fabrics and finishes, without forgetting her “revolutionary” and now controversial use of animal hair -signature of the Fendi house- that she incorporated in the form of flower decorations. or with prints on garments that were not warm.

At the end, a section focused on Lagerfeld himself awaits, known for his “dandy” “uniform” with a black and white suit, gloves, sunglasses and hair tied up in a ponytail, an image that transcended pop culture and that for him it was a “puppet” that he handled in the eyes of society.

In this sense, there is an artistic installation with dozens of iPhones -he did not take off the phone- in which he appears in his uniform but laughing, in an unusual display of humanity, and which is accompanied by phrases that he said: “Luxury is the freedom of the spirit, independence, basically political incorrectness”.

UNUSUAL, CURIOUS…AND CONTROVERSIAL

As Commissioner Bolton explained to EFE, it will be difficult for the fashion sector to see someone again “with such a long career, and such immense intelligence and curiosity”: “I think that design is not catching up with him, he was anticipating where fashion was going It was very unusual in this world.”

Model and former French first lady Carla Bruni, a surprise guest at the event, remembered Lagerfeld as a friend, describing him as elegant, generous and with a “wicked sense of humour”, but above all “noble”, a word for which she apologized. a couple of times before him looking at the sky.

Bruni’s description was the only one that glimpsed Lagerfeld’s complex personality beyond his creative capacity, since on many occasions he made racist, misogynistic or insulting comments towards overweight people, who gave an account of his controversial ideas.

He was a “universally curious man and interested in everything and everyone, except mediocrity,” said the former model, dressed in Chanel, who sat in the front row at the presentation, in a room of the museum, next to the influential head of US Vogue, Anna Wintour, and Swiss tennis player Roger Federer.
