Myriam Hernández and the secrets of “The man I love”: “He had verses with which he did not agree”

When I was four, Myriam Hernandez (Santiago, 1967) wanted to sing and become “that singer who traveled”. She has been on stage for four decades and her iconic song, “The Man I Love”, turns 35. “I was born to sing and I will do it until the public wants“, says. As part of her Mi Paraíso Tour, the American balladeer will perform on August 15 and 16 at the Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú for the first time.

“I noticed that it was a song that perfectly conveyed what a woman in love feels. I fell in love with its lyrics and melody as soon as I heard it. It was powerful. I struggled to record it. It quickly became a hit.”, he highlights. “It was not made or dedicated to someone special”, he clarifies.

A few years after its release, when the Chilean artist began to become aware that part of this letter (Always fly away but return to the nest) did not represent his ideals or principles, he decided to change it to: “I always fly far, but I return to the nest”.

“There are verses with which I did not agree, because I do not forgive a man who leaves and returns. I’m not submissive. I also didn’t want to give that message to people, so I changed the conjugation”, he emphasizes.

“The Man I Love” has been covered in different languages ​​and genres around the world. In 2020, the Peruvian Susan Ochoa released a version fusing rock and ballad.

“I heard it. I also heard versions of Daniela Darcourt and other Peruvian singers. Susan is a tremendous artist, I love her. We have shared the stage. It’s too nice that your music has such an impact”, she refers, excited. “Recently, in the last edition of the Viña del Mar Festival, I had the wonderful honor of singing a version of this song with Karol G. 17 years ago I did not go up to Quinta Vergara. The video clip was recorded in the Concón dunes, in Valparaíso. In 2012, a week after its publication on YouTube, it became the most viewed on the platform with 20.5 million views.
