“The little mermaid” made in Peru? Vania Masías recreates the classic tale as a musical and includes an unexpected message

Siena (Mariagracia Mora) is an intrepid mermaid who, despite the denial of her authoritarian father Tritón (Nicolás Galindo), goes to the surface to find answers to the current problems of contamination in her world. And together with Américo, a marine biologist (Matías Spitzer), who loves the sea, he will look for a way to live together and make Malvina (Anahí de Cárdenas) see, the evil octopus, that there is tolerance in the coexistence of two worlds and the sorry.

“Sirena, the musical”, is an original version by Vania Masías, with a script by Mariana Silva, which, beyond the romantic spirit of the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen, delivers a message that, among other things, promotes caring for the environment, the recognition of our Peruvian identity and the introduction of values such as self-esteem, empathy and resilience.

Starting from a commercial work, we have created a staging with an educational component through fun and entertainment. Our intention is to teach children and adults the importance of taking care of the planet and creating awareness of love. With this work I learned some things that I did not know, such as that the Peruvian sea is the most productive in the world, but also the most neglected. If the sea dies, humanity and all living things will die because the ocean is the main source of oxygen on the planet. We have generated islands of garbage, the size of a continent in the middle of the ocean”, says Masías with great concern. “That’s why Triton hates humans. He doesn’t understand how they can destroy their own habitat”, he adds about the theatrical adaptation.

Vania Masías is motivated to talk about the sea with whom she has a fairly close relationship. And she also has a special and personal interest in environmental issues and care for the planet.

Talking about pollution in the sea has not been recent. I married a person who loves the sea. My husband is an aquaculture engineer, he works in the sea. He is a diver. My daughter’s name is Mar and I’ve always had a very close relationship with him. I spend three months a year in Los Órganos, a beach in Piura“, Explain.

talent that excites

After going through a demanding casting in which she moved Vania Masías with her voice, actress Mariagracia Mora was chosen to play the protagonist of this exciting story that brings together a powerful cast of actors: Anahí de Cárdenas, Andrés Salas, Nicolás Galindo , Merly Morelo, Alexia Barnechea, Matías Spitzer, Muriel García, Shinichi Tokumori, Claret Quea, Adriana Campos Salazar, among others, accompanied by dancers from D1.

I will not deny that there are times when it is inevitable not to get carried away a little by the original story, but since this is a version with so many lessons, I feel responsible for carrying this super important message. We all live in the same ecosystem, we have to understand each other, listen to each other, know how to dialogue. It had a major impact on me. Siena is the character that any actor dreams of. He is too rich. She also allowed me to rediscover my childhood”, maintains the popular ‘Mayacha’.

The scenes feature visuals by Valicha Evans (Lima, 2019), original music by Chick Aguirre (Lima, 2019) and digital content for interaction with the public.

The premiere of “Sirena, the musical” is on September 14 and runs until October 1 at the Teatro NOS, in San Isidro. Tickets are on sale at Joinnus.
