“Barbie” suffers postponement of its premiere in Russia: What is the reason?

Russian cinemas have postponed the premiere with a pirated copy of “Barbie”scheduled for September 9, amid pressure from the Ministry of Culture, which considers that the tape does not correspond to the traditional moral values defended by the Kremlin.

The premiere of the film that has had blockbusters around the world has been postponed until September 14 or 16, the Telegram channel Mash reports today.

The theaters hope to reach an agreement with Culture, whose decision is not shared by some film critics, who insist that “Barbie” promotes heterosexual relationships.

The ministry replies that Russians should not watch Hollywood movies, but Russian ones like “Witness” which tells the story of a Western violinist who happens to be present in Ukraine at war crimes committed by Kiev soldiers. The studios screening the American film (Red Head Sound) highlighted that “the digital copy will be of the highest quality.”

As reported by The Flow, a popular digital portal on youth culture, the Russian actors have already dubbed the main protagonists of the film, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell.

Against all odds, the other film of the moment, “Oppenheimer”, the new work by the famous British director Christopher Nolan, will theoretically be released earlier.

The Ráduga Kinó cinema in Moscow has announced for Thursday afternoon the screening of the film starring the Irishman Cillian Murphy, which premiered worldwide on July 20. Russian film critics point out that the film about the creator of the atomic bomb is actually an anti-war film.

As both films will not officially be released in this country – the big studios have turned their backs on Russia because of the war in Ukraine -, the billboard will not feature images of Robbie or Murphy, but a short film.

In clubs and cinemas in various Russian regions, “Barbie” was shown in recent weeks, although some viewers left the theater in the middle of the film due to the poor quality of the pirated copy, according to the press.

The Russian deputy, María Bútina, an alleged spy exchanged with the United States, criticized the Greta Gerwig film and urged the removal of the Barbie doll from the Mattel company from stores in this country.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has urged Russians to download pirated copies of American movies and Netflix series online to achieve their “bankruptcy” over Western sanctions and NATO support for the Ukrainian military.
