“Fauda”: the shocking Netflix series that gained relevance with the Israel-Palestine conflict

In the midst of the escalating war between Israel and Hamas“Fauda”, the Israeli series in Netflix has gained significant attention for its focus on war issues between Israel and Palestine, as well as for images of its protagonist, Lior Raz, participating in a rescue mission in Sderot, a city in the south of the country.

Considered one of the best international series of 2017 by The New York Times, the war fiction arrived on Israeli television in the summer of 2016 when it was acquired by the Yes satellite television system. Then, on December 2 of that same year, it premiered on Netflix, achieving notable hegemony and a global audience.

“Fauda,” a word that means chaos in Arabic and is the term used by Israeli covert forces to notify rescue units that they have been discovered, is based on the experiences of its creators Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz in military service in the Duvdevan Unit, the elite special operations force of the State of Israel.

The series of Netflix exposes the historic conflict between Israel and Palestine through Doron Kavillio (Raz), a former member of the Israel Defense Forces, who returns from retirement upon learning that Abu Ahmad ‘The Panther’, the dangerous Hamas terrorist whom believed to have murdered is still alive and plans an attack with sarin gas on a synagogue.

It is a production full of adrenaline, drama and violence. It shows both sides of the conflict, both the Israeli forces and the violent actions of Hamas. It also offers a space for dialogue and reflection.

The series, which has four seasons, of 12 episodes each, has been renewed for a fifth installment. Yes Studios confirmed that there is still much more to tell in this emotionally charged story. The news was announced by the television station’s CEO, Ilan Sigal, along with co-creator, Avi Issacharoff, at an annual event.

From fiction to reality

Early last Saturday, Hamas surprised Israel with a lightning terrorist attack by air and land. Following the infiltration of the Palestinian Islamist movement from Gaza, at least 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 people taken hostage. As a result of the ambush, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “We are at war.”

In the midst of the worst massacre of civilians that Hamas has perpetrated on Israeli soil, Lior Raz, beyond his leading role in “Fauda”, recently participated in the evacuation of two Israeli families. Through Instagram he shared a video of the operation, where he was seen accompanied by Yohanan Plesner and Avi Yissascharov.

I was heading south to join hundreds of brave volunteer ‘brothers in arms’ who worked tirelessly to help the people in southern Israel. We were sent to the bombed city of Sderot to rescue two families”, he wrote alongside a video. In the images he is seen looking at the sky and seeking refuge behind a wall, when a missile falls.

Similarly, the “Fauda” actor, Idan Amedi, joined the defense tasks of the Israeli Army. Dressed in military uniform, he thanked the people for their support and promised that he will not give up in his fight against terrorism.
