“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” among the ten best films of 2023, according to the AFI awards

The 2023 AFI Awards, organized by the American Film Institute, announced this Thursday this year’s 20 winning film and television projects, including films such as ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.

The awards recognize the 10 best films and the 10 best series of the year, regardless of genre, and as a whole honor the creative teams of each production and those in front of and behind the camera.

The film section includes Greta Gerwig’s film, based on the adventures of the Mattel doll in the real world, and Christopher Nolan’s film about the inventor of the atomic bomb, whose simultaneous premiere generated a fever among moviegoers named ‘ Barbenheimer’.

The selection also includes Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, chosen by the National Council of Film Critics as the best film of 2023and which stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Also, Cord Jefferson’s comedy-drama ‘American Fiction’, which follows the story of a teacher who jokingly writes a book full of stereotypes about blacks that becomes a hit, or the biographical film directed and starring Bradley Cooper ‘Teacher’ , about the conductor Leonard Bernstein, were also decorated by the institution.

The list of winners continues with less commercial titles such as ‘Poor Thing’, by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, as well as Todd Haynes’ drama ‘May December’, with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in the lead, or Celine Song’s nostalgic film ‘Past Lives’, which follows the reunion of two friends.

Other films honored are the animated film ‘Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse’ and the Christmas film ‘The Holdovers’.

Regarding television content, AFI considered series such as ‘Succession’ as winners, the most nominated for the next edition of the Emmys; the dramatic comedy that follows chef Carmen Berzatto, ‘The Bear’, or the apocalyptic series ‘The Last of Us’, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

The Netflix series ‘Beef’, the ABC comedy ‘Abbott Elementary’ and the mystery comedy ‘Only Murders in the Building’, from Hulu, are also among the 2023 winners.

According to the AFI, award-winning productions are selected for their ability to inspire audiences and artists, as well as enhance the cultural heritage of American art, among other aspects.
