Gipsy Kings returns to Peru: fan tattooed lyrics to their songs, sick people get up and dance to their music, and more

They have taken their fusion of flamenco, pop and Catalan rumba to stages all over the planet. They have sold more than 60 million albums and earned prestigious awards, including a Latin Grammy for Best World Music Album for “Savor flamenco.” In 1987 they reached the status of a global phenomenon and more than three decades later they are still in force. It is about the Gipsy kingsa French gypsy group with Spanish roots that has managed to overcome generations and fashions by singing from the heart.

Due to family differences, the band responsible for the hits “Djobi Djoba” and “Bamboleo”, in October 2014 was divided. Currently, there are two groups that own the brand and permission to freely use the repertoire of songs: the Gipsy Kings by Nicolás Reyes and Gipsy Kings by André Reyes, his brother, who will offer a concert on February 23 at the Boulevard of Asia (Paradiso), as part of their El Origen tour.

About their visits to Peru, their evolution over time and how they have remained current, preserving their essence; We spoke with three of its members: André, Thomas and Kakou Reyes.

—Why is the tour called “The Origin”?

Andre: Because we want to return to our roots, remember where we come from as artists and relive the moments that inspired us to be part of this musical journey. Origen is a way to reconnect with the very essence of our music and share that journey with our fans.

— Do you have any memories that have stood out to you from your visits to Peru?

Thomas: Every visit to Peru has been unforgettable. The energy and passion of the Peruvian public is contagious. I fondly remember the warmth with which we were received and the unique connection we shared during each performance. Peru’s stunning landscapes and cultural wealth always leave a lasting mark on our hearts.

— Did you ever think about fusing your music with Peruvian music?

Kakou: Although we have not fused directly with Peruvian music so far, we are always open to exploring new collaborations and cultural fusions. The richness of Peruvian music is fascinating, and it could be an exciting experience to incorporate those elements into our music in the future.

—How much has the group evolved since “Allegria” (1982), the first Gipsy Kings album?

Andre: We have experienced significant evolution. We have explored new musical influences, matured as artists and taken the essence of flamenco to unimaginable places. Despite the changes, the essence and passion that have characterized us since our first days remain at the heart of our music.

— In a constantly evolving musical world, in which urban rhythms and fusions predominate, how have they managed to overcome generations and fashions?

Thomas: Authenticity and emotional connection with our songs are the key. Each track carries with it our genuine experiences and emotions, which resonates with the audience. The energy we share on stage translates into a lasting connection with our fans, who have found a timeless refuge in our music. We sing with our hearts.

—Although you experiment with new genres and fusions, will your flamenco essence continue to be the basis of your music?

Kakou: We will always maintain our unique identity. We hope to continue bringing our passion for flamenco to diverse audiences and surprise with new sound explorations. We definitely consider ourselves passionate followers of the flamenco tradition led by greats like Camarón de la Isla and Paco de Lucía. We have learned and been inspired by their mastery, and although we have explored fusions, we always maintain a deep respect for the flamenco root that defines us.

— Is it true that you have seen sick people get up and dance to your music?

Andre: Music has a healing and unifying power. We have witnessed people getting through difficult times by finding comfort in our songs. The ability to touch the hearts and bring joy to the lives of others is one of the greatest rewards we have gained throughout our careers.

—Any anecdote you can share.

Thomas: One memorable anecdote was during a performance where a fan showed us a tattoo of our lyrics. It was a powerful reminder of the deep connection people can have with our music. Close interactions with our followers, filled with love and devotion, are moments we treasure.

—How do you define this stage of Gipsy Kings by André Reyes?

Andre: It is an exciting chapter in our history. We are committed to continuing the legacy of our music, sharing new creations with the world and connecting with global audiences. It is a time of celebration of what we have achieved and anticipation of what is to come. We are excited to continue writing our musical history.
