Justin Timberlake released ‘Selfish’ this Thursday, the first single from what will be his sixth studio album, titled ‘Everything I Thought It Was’, scheduled for March 15. ‘Selfish’ is also his first solo song since he released his album ‘Man of the Woods’ in 2018.
According to Sony in a statement, this new pop song was written by Timberlake, Theron Thomas, Amy Allen, Louis Bell and Cirkut. The latter two have worked, respectively, for artists such as Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.
The author of ‘Cry Me a River’ speaks in ‘Selfish’ of the excessive love for a person and the feeling of selfishness that his desire to possess them provokes. “I want every little bit of you, I guess I’m selfish,” Timberlake sings.
The single is accompanied by a video directed by Bradley J. Calder, who has worked with artists such as SZA and Tinashe, and in this video the frustrated singer is seen while rehearsing recording a video.
Performance and reality blur as Timberlake tries to reach a red telephone that will put him in touch with his loved one, while the walls of the room become smaller and smaller.
“It is a raw and honest portrait of Justin as an artist and person,” dictates the statement from the record company.
Timberlake performed ‘Selfish’ live at a concert he gave last week in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, but the official release of said single took place this Thursday.
This song will be followed by the premiere of new songs like ‘Sanctified’ and ‘No Angels’, which will also be part of ‘Everything I Thought It Was’.
Despite the years of absence as a solo artist, Timberlake did not leave music at that time, as he collaborated in the creation of soundtracks for films such as ‘Trolls’ (2020) and ‘Trolls Band Together’ (2023), whose song ‘Better Place ‘ reunited him with the boy band that launched him to stardom in the 1990s, NSYNC.
This Thursday, the singer will appear on ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon’ and on Saturday he will perform on the comedy show ‘Saturday Night Live.’
