“American Fiction”: where to stream the Oscar-winning film?

“American Fiction” was one of the films that won one of the trophies of the Oscar 2024. The film directed by Cord Jefferson took the award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

“American Fiction” premiered in theaters in the United States on December 15, 2023. In Peru and other Latin American countries it did not have a commercial release.

“American Fiction” begins with the professional crisis of Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a brilliant academic and writer, whose talent the world has not realized. His problems worsen when he is suspended from the professorship he teaches at a university for reading a text that contains the word ‘nigger’ in a literary analysis class that is offensive to a white student.

The forced vacation that comes after the confrontation with the student forces him to spend a few days with his family in Boston and face a truth that makes him uncomfortable: the books he has published are very good, but they do not sell and end up in the sections of “African American studies” in libraries even though they address stories that have nothing to do with the subject. To be a black man is to be subject to stereotypes and ‘Monk’ knows it, but for a long time he wanted to evade them completely. Until the success of a young African-American writer (Issa Rae) who writes as an African-American is expected to write motivates him to do the same. What he will not imagine is that his mocking provocation will be the beginning of the greatest professional success that he will experience in his life.
