Actress talks about AFHS, motherhood and Tere: “It hurt me that she became the protagonist and they left me aside”

In the world of fiction there are characters that go beyond being simple roles in a story. For Magdyel Ugaz (Lima, 1984), Teresa Collazos in “There is room at the bottom” is much more than a fictional figure on screen, he is an integral part of his life and a refuge in turbulent times. Through her interpretation she has managed to heal wounds, find comfort and, above all, share the love and gratitude she feels for this fun and colorful character who returns to the screens this October 8, in the eleventh season of the popular television series. America TV.

When the actress played Teresita for the first time at the age of 24, little did she imagine the significance it would have on her life. Today, about to turn 40, she is still wrapped in the skin of the daughter of Nelly Camacho and Gilberto Collazos, whom she hugs with the same affection with which her character hugs her.

─What is Tere for you?

It’s too many things. She mobilized, challenged and made me very uncomfortable, it also made me love her. I am currently experiencing a very nice stage with the character, because, I must admit, we have also fought.

─What caused these fights?

It hurt me that she became the protagonist and they left me aside. Everyone asked about her, no one about me. That doesn’t happen to me now because I am at another point in my life, much more mature. At some point I also questioned myself about being an actress, but I understood that I am many more things that I am now allowing myself to inhabit and I am excited to be able to share them.

─Currently, when are you with Teresita?

In a very nice moment because I dare to do more with the character. I am more open, more willing and I like that. La Tere has a lightness that like Magdyel I did not allow myself to explore because sometimes I am very closed. She is a beautiful energy, which refreshes me, she is a very instructive character.

─What lessons did he give you?

To not take everything so seriously. I think that as important as listening to what people have to say about you, is knowing who you are listening to and giving them the power to give their opinion about you. We, artists, are exposed to being told things that hurt, that touch nerves, like that you are single, old, that you missed the train, when are you going to have children… I am interested in hearing only what It comes with respect, love and empathy.

─Do you have similarities with Tere?

When I was a chibola I really liked wearing colorful clothes like her (laughs). At one point in my life I thought I was Kim Kardashian, at another I thought I was a hippie. At almost 40 I feel happy, well, I like what I see in the mirror, I feel happy.

─Happiness is very subjective, each person perceives it differently. What is happiness for you?

A few days ago, I heard a psychologist, who I love, say that happiness was being able to look inside yourself, everything you are, and not feel ashamed of it. My eyes filled with tears because being able to embrace, without feeling shame or guilt, everything that you are and that often makes you uncomfortable or that you want to change, is happiness.

─How do you see this new stage of “At the bottom there is room”?

I love it because it has brought us a generation of very talented young actors, like Jorge Guerra, Karime Scander, Franco Pennano, Guadalupe Farfán, all very talented. With their talent they manage to cross the screen, touch the heart. This series is like a gym for actors, we constantly train our ears, improvisation, many things. It is also demanding.

─How did Teresita come into your life?

Efraín Aguilar, who discovered me as an actress and trusted me for many productions, such as “1000 Oficios” and “This is Life,” proposed that I be in “Al Fondo Hay Sitio.” He was leaving surmenage that he had given me. She had done “Dina Páucar, the fight for a dream” and I had to give up doing “Dina Páucar 2” because I couldn’t take it anymore. After a year without working and dedicating myself completely to my emotional health, Efraín’s proposal came to play Teresita, a character that got me out of the funk I was in and took me on numerous trips. At that time I had gained weight, many did not recognize me.

─What happened to your health?

After making “Vírgenes de la cumbia”, Pancho Lombardi’s film, “Mariposa negra”, and a play, I began to feel physically exhausted, but I didn’t give it any importance, until my body collapsed. I had a panic attack, the thing cut off and I couldn’t work anymore, neither my body nor I were connected enough to be able to play a character. I received a lot of psychological and psychiatric help. Blessed, God! Bless you, Efraín Aguilar, Gigio Aranda and Estela Redhead, and all those who decided that this character was for me. He saved me and healed me. It was what she needed at that moment.

─How did you receive the end of the first stage of “At the bottom there is room”, when the Gonzales house was demolished and there was no turning back?

It was very strong, we all cried. After the series I went on a trip to study in Cuba, and when I returned to make “Colorina” I felt that something was stuck in my chest, it was the mourning of something that had ended, I felt a void, a strange thing. Almost six years later, life gave us the opportunity to get together again, connect and have those conversations that were pending.

─Is the topic of motherhood also part of your pending plans?

I am not going to deny that it is there, it is also part of the conversations I have with myself and my therapist, but I think it is something so special and important that if it has to happen, it will happen. I froze eggs, but I don’t know if I will be a mother or not.

─What do you expect from this season of “At the bottom there is room?”

May the public have fun, have a good time and enjoy. The series never stops surprising us, and as long as it continues to do so we will be able to continue telling stories.

─What will happen to ‘Tere’?

Even though she is the Fairy Godmother of love, and it didn’t go well in that aspect, I hope with all my heart that it will be achieved with Gaspar, who dared to ask for her hand. I would love for her, without ceasing to be her, to form her family, with her boy and her son. I hope only good things happen to her.
