Jerry Seinfeld turns 70: The directorial debut of the most remembered comedian of the 90s

Jerry Seinfeld He is obsessed with breakfast, not because of its importance as the first meal of the day, but because of an uncontrollable taste for the combination between a bowl, a spoon and the mixture of milk and cereal, or cereal and milk. Although none of that compares to his passion for pop tarts, a food that accompanied him almost every day during the 90s while he was recording the successful series that bears the title of his last name, and that is now part of the main plot of his first film, “Unfrosted”: the story of how Kellog’s and Post, rival cereal companies, compete to create a new pastry that will change breakfast forever.

After almost 50 years dedicated to comedy since his appearance at the Catch a Rising Star comedy club in New York City in 1976, Seinfeld still finds humor in the absurdities of everyday life, at the intersection between the anecdotal and the events ephemera that his comedy poses, something that is titled “Seinfeldian comedy.”

At the end of the most popular comedy series of the last decade, “Seinfeld” (1989-1998), the natural path for the comedian was Los Angeles, where he could continue a career in Hollywood films. In his place, he headed to New York, where he would continue performing stand-up shows, writing books about his past stage routines, and touring different clubs around the world.

A new beginning

During the new millennium, he appeared in two web commercials for the American Express brand titled “The Adventures of Seinfeld & Superman,” where the artist appeared with a cartoon of Superman, who was referenced in different episodes of the now-concluded series.

Other appearances that referenced the ’90s series included his appearance at the National Museum of American History in 2004 to donate the “puffy shirt” he wore in the “Seinfeld” episode of the same name. At that time, followers of the comedian’s work speculated about a supposed curse, after the failure of several projects by the former cast members of the series, something that the comedian described as absurd.

In 2008, Jerry Seinfeld made an appearance at the 80th Academy Awards. He voiced the animated character Barry in “Bee Movie” and presented the “Best Animated Short Film” category. Before announcing the nominees, he showed a montage of film clips featuring bees, joking that they were some of his earliest work, alluding to his role as Barry in the film.

In 2009, the former members of the ’90s series would appear publicly to reunite on the series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” an appearance that would put him back on the public radar. Subsequent projects increased, as did his appearances on programs such as “The Daily Show”, “The Howard Stern Show”, “The Jay Leno Show” and “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update”.

Other small projects also included the web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” (2012), an appearance in the video clip for “Outro About Nothing” (2013) by rapper Wale, or his participation as a special presenter for the 40th anniversary of “Saturday “Night Live.”

However, it would not be until 2017 that Seinfeld would sign a deal with Netflix to publish and create a new season for “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” develop scripted and unscripted comedies, and create the stand-up special Jerry Before Seinfeld. . Added to these projects would be the stand-up special “23 HOURS TO KILL” (2022) that can only be seen through this streaming platform.

More than 25 years after the conclusion of “Seinfeld,” the comedian does not regret the end of the series, nor does he regret not having participated in the Hollywood industry. And true to his casual style of life, he now ventures to be a film director, a natural evolution of “homo comedicus.”
