“The Lord of the Rings” prepares new films, the first will focus on Gollum

The Lord of the rings will return to theaters and will do it again with Peter Jackson. The filmmaker who directed The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies based on the books by JRR Tolkien will return to Middle Earth, as he is preparing new films in the franchise. The first of them, focused on Gollum, will hit the billboard within two years.

At Warner Bros. Discovery’s first-quarter earnings call, CEO David Zaslav revealed that the company is “now in the early stages of script development” for the new Lord of the Rings films, which, according to him, “they will explore stories yet to be told.”

Zaslav claimed that director Peter Jackson and his fellow screenwriters, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens“they will be involved every step of the way.” “The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history and presents a significant opportunity for our theatrical business.”he added.

The first film will be titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and will be directed by and starring Andy Serkis, the actor who gave life to the creature in Jackson’s two trilogies.

Warner Bros. Discovery already revealed in 2023 that it was developing new films in the saga, reaching an agreement with the rights holders of the novels, Embracer Group AB, to develop future productions.

For its part, Amazon is also developing its own broader television universe for the franchise, a path that already began with the launch of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Following the premiere of the fiction, it was said that Jackson and his co-writers were “frustrated” because many people thought they were involved in the Amazon saga, when that was not the case.

The film saga began in 2001 with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Then The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) were released. In addition, Jackson also went behind the cameras in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). The original trilogy, which won a total of 17 Oscars, will return to theaters this summer, remastered and expanded.
