An exhibition to reflect on the bicentennial of Peru and the pandemic

Lima, December 2, 2021Updated on 02/12/2021 10:54 am

If an average Peruvian citizen were asked what are the events for which 2021 will be remembered in Peru? Probably two of the most recurrent responses would be: the COVID-19 pandemic and the celebration of the bicentennial of our independence. Precisely, it is on this last topic that it deals with “No eres tú, soy John”, eleventh individual of the plastic artist John Chauca, in whose works the history of the first 200 years of our country as a republic coexists with the lags of the pandemic crisis and the inevitable female figures that characterize the works of the creator. The 17 pieces that make up this show will be able to be seen in the virtual room Kunstmatrix of the Yvonne Sanguineti gallery from December 2.

Those who have followed Chauca’s career know that those that make up this exhibition were painted during the last year and are “a testimonial reference to what has happened and what we celebrate,” the artist points out. It is no coincidence then that one of the works,

"Fallen Angel" and "Instagram II"

Two other paintings feature the figure of General Don José de San Martín, used not only to evoke our liberation from the Spanish yoke but also to criticize the system and economic power. We know that this is not only Peruvian heritage, it happens all the time. But let us remember the Spanish conquerors fighting for the gold and silver of Peru or a more recent event, the Odebretch millionaire scandal ”, he points out.

"The disciple", homage to Víctor Huamreda.

With “The disciple”, Chauca also remembers the teacher Víctor Humareda and the 100 years of his birth. A tribute with a nod to his most admired painter, the Dutchman Vincent Van Gogh.

More information: The exhibition opens on December 2 at 7:30 pm via Zoom and will be available until January 10 on the web yvonnesanguinetigaleria.com.
