Chayanne opens his heart: the loss of his mother, a reflection on music and more in an exclusive interview

Chayanne He is just how his fans describe him: attentive, friendly and with a captivating energy. This is how we perceive him when he welcomes us with a wide smile and aviator glasses in a connection by Zoom to talk about his work in “Sing 2 ″, where he plays a character who for many reasons differs from him, but at the same time it allows you to reflect on many of your emotions.

Written and directed by Garth Jennings, “Sing 2” brings us back into contact with the world of Buster Moon and all his artist friends, with new characters being added. Among them Clay Calloway, a singing lion as bitter as he is a veteran who, losing his wife, withdraws from the stage. In the English version, Clay is played by Bono (from the band U2), while in the Spanish version, Chayanne is the one who gives him his voice.

Clay Calloway has a character that is capable of scaring anyone. His voice trailed off when his great love passed away, but Buster Moon, Ash, Rosita and the entire group of “Sing 2” artists will need his help to succeed in a world inspired by Broadway.

Chayanne explains that he identifies with his character in many ways. “”, Add. However, the interpreter recognizes that there are other aspects in which he failed to recognize himself in the character. “Perhaps some things that I did not identify with was Clay’s character, but I had a lot of help from the ‘vocal coach’, from the company and from the great team that they are.”, He complements.

Chayanne like Clay had a great loss. In 2014, his mother passed away and that grief helped him understand his character in “Sing 2.” “I have not felt the need to get away from everyone but I have had situations similar to the character that helped me nurture myself to play Clay Calloway as was the loss of my mommy seven years ago”, He narrates. “That was a very big pain,” he recalls.

Unlike Clay who retires from the stage, Chayanne says that when he loses his mother, he continues with his tour. ””, He adds.

Few children’s films touch on a subject as delicate as mourning, but in “Sing 2” they do it with empathy in a way in which adults and children can understand the suffering that losing someone brings and how time heals wounds, even just keep the good memories. The singer indicates that he also thought about how human beings are: unique and that each one can react in a different way to an event like this.

Clay Calloway withdraws from everyone at first and then thanks to his colleagues, he manages to go out and do what he was so passionate about. That’s what you’ll see on the screen, a character who retires from music but manages to get out of the state he was in when he decides to help his new friends. More than by himself, he wants to help his friends “he adds.

Finally, Chayanne reflects on how these films that apparently are for children leave messages for the whole family. He does not consider that they are only for a specific group because he is convinced that one can identify with the characters. In the case of this film, music is key and for him, being a singer, the musical collection that director Jennings raised is very important. “The music always accompanies. When you are as old (as I am), and you listen to a song, you remember when you were 15 years old, and that song can take you to a specific moment in your life. That is the part I like the most about this movie, the music “, concludes.
