Goya Awards: producers and directors of the Peruvian film “Song without a name” will attend the award ceremony

The producers and directors of the national film “nameless song” will attend the award ceremony of the Goya Awards, in Spain, which will take place on February 12, 2022 in Valencia, after the Ministry of Culture of Peru sent a letter to the Board of Directors of the Academy of Culture on January 17 Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain.

It should be noted that this institution is in charge of convening and organizing the renowned Goya Awards, in whose award ceremony, the Peruvian film “Song without a name” will participate as one of the nominees for Best Ibero-American Film.

However, days before, the Goya Awards Committee had made the decision to hold the awards for the Best Ibero-American Film and Best European Film categories virtually, as a measure to avoid contagion as they are films made outside of Spain.

That is why, given this decision, the Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries, Sonaly Tuesta, after the contact she had with the producers of “Canción sin nombre”, decided to send a letter to the Board of Directors of the Academy of Arts and the Cinematographic Sciences of Spain.

There, he pointed out that, “as a country and as the governing body of culture in Peru, it is an honor that a Peruvian production such as ‘Song without a name’ has managed to be nominated for the Best Ibero-American Film category, after intense and dedicated work. that involves our ministry, promotion entities, academies and dozens of Spanish and Latin American professionals who have put all their effort and creativity in the candidacy and nomination stage”.

In said letter, Tuesta, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, affirmed that, “we consider that as the Goya Awards are an important window for Latin American cinema (already invisible), the face-to-face participation of our filmmakers in the award ceremony is relevant. award ceremony, who, as there is no impediment to entering and leaving our countries and respecting all the health protocols established by their country to prevent the spread of SaRsCov2, do not find it inconvenient to attend the Palace of Arts in Valencia like all the other guests ” .

Finally, he stated that “The Ministry of Culture, being one of the institutions that has been collaborating in the development and promotion of cinema made in Peru, as it is ‘Song with no name, values ​​the effort of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Film Academy in holding the Goya Awards, avoiding the risks of contagion of the attendees, without this meaning precluding the face-to-face participation of the nominees for the aforementioned categories”

In this way, and added to the pronouncement of the producers and directors nominated and prevented from attending, the Committee of the 36 Goya Awards today reversed its decision and will allow the eight feature films nominated for Best European Film and Best Ibero-American Film, among they “nameless song”, participate in person at the award ceremony, next February 12.

“Song without a name” debut feature by Melina León, premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, being the first Peruvian film directed by a woman, to be selected at said festival. It had its commercial premiere in Greece on January 23, 2020. It has also been in theaters in countries such as France and Japan.

Inspired by real events and set in the 1980s, the film has actors Tommy Párraga and Pamela Mendoza in the main roles. It has participated in more than 100 festivals worldwide, achieving more than 40 awards, including the award for Best Feature Film at the Stockholm Festival (Sweden), Best Director at the Thessaloniki Festival (Greece), the FIPRESCI New Visions/New Voices Award at the Palm Springs Festival (United States), and four awards at the Huelva Festival (Spain) highlighting the Colón de Oro for Best Feature Film, among others.

·Since the creation of the Goya Awards, seven Peruvian films have been nominated in this category, being “Fallen from Heaven”, by director Francisco Lombardi, the only national work to achieve this recognition, in the fifth edition of the contest in 1990.
