If you’re having trouble sleeping, chances are you’ve been lying down at night and craving a potion to help you fall asleep.

While that’s a bit of a pipe dream, people on TikTok are touting a new drink as a game changer for a better night’s sleep, with one creator saying it has hair “like a light.”

Wellness influencer Gracie Norton is one of the fans of the “Sleepy Girl” mocktail, and in a video that has now reached 1.5 million views, she claimed it helped her get “the best night’s sleep ever.”

Similarly, user Calee Shea said the potion “has.” [her] in a stranglehold,” with her video explaining how to do it, with comments like “it’s literally that good” and “lifesaver.”

So what is this concoction that people can’t stop talking about? Is it the sleep miracle it’s supposed to be? And is it safe?

Let’s start with the basics. The Sleepy Girl Cocktail consists of three ingredients: pure tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and a small amount of olipop soda to top it off.

OUT LIKE A LIGHT Mocktail ????‍???????????? Sour Cherry Juice + Magnesium is the perfect combination for a full night’s sleep! I also had really vivid dreams! I take magnesium every night but tend to toss and turn at night at the end of my luteal phase. Olipop Fizzy Drinks contain prebiotic soluble fiber and are low in sugar compared to traditional options, which some see as a healthy alternative when you crave sparkling water. However, some flavors contain caffeine – not ideal for bedtime – and getting your hands on the brand here in the UK isn’t easy.

Pure tart cherry juice is a bit more readily available, but make sure you get the right product, as classic cherry juice and blended or sweetened varieties do not have the same effects.

Martin Seeley, sleep expert and CEO of MattressNextDay, told Metro.co.uk: “There is some evidence that consuming pure tart cherry juice can promote drowsiness and improve sleep quality.

“Tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles.”

There is also support for magnesium as an important component of sleep, as it plays an important role in a number of bodily functions, including the production of melatonin and the process of physical relaxation.

“Magnesium has a calming effect on the nervous system, which can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep,” explains Martin.

“In addition to its relaxation-promoting effects, magnesium may also help reduce muscle tension and spasms, which can be a common cause of sleep problems.”

In principle, it’s not a bad idea to mix a mocktail for a sleepy girl yourself, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

“Be careful with drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol, as they can negatively affect sleep quality,” says Martin.

“It’s also important to pay attention to the timing of your sleep-inducing drink. Having a drink, even without caffeine or alcohol, too close to bedtime can disrupt sleep because you have to go to the bathroom at night.”

We also recommend caution when taking too much magnesium.

Doctor Donald Grant from the online pharmacy The independent pharmacytold Metro.co.uk that while there is anecdotal evidence that it can be beneficial in small doses, high doses can pose problems.

“Some studies suggest that magnesium, when taken in higher doses, has a laxative effect, making it useful for relieving constipation,” he said.

“I always recommend consulting a pharmacist or doctor before taking magnesium supplements.”

As an alternative nightcap (in moderation, of course), Martin recommends chamomile, lavender, valerian root, passion flower, and the aforementioned sour cherry juice. These ingredients have a natural calming effect, so it may be worth switching up your usual cup of tea before bed if you have trouble relaxing.

However, remember that there is no miracle cure for sleep problems. It takes a consistent focus on a healthy lifestyle to see meaningful effects.

Once you’ve mastered your overall sleep hygiene, try mixology.

Martin’s advice for relaxing at night (without having to try the sleepy girl mocktail)

  1. Have a consistent bedtime ritual: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and promotes better sleep.
  1. Create a relaxed sleeping environment: Make your bedroom a comfortable and quiet place with a comfortable mattress, pillows and bedding. Keep the temperature cool, dark, and still, and consider using earplugs or a white noise machine if necessary.
  1. Limit screen time before bed: The blue light emitted by electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers can disrupt your sleep by suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. Try to avoid screens for at least 30 minutes to an hour before bed.
  1. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol can disrupt sleep. Try not to consume them a few hours before bedtime.
  1. Practice relaxation techniques: Activities such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help you relax and prepare for sleep.
  1. Read a book: Reading a book before bed can be a great way to relax and signal your brain that it’s time to go to sleep.
  1. Take a warm bath or shower: A warm bath or shower before bed can help relax your muscles and promote sleep.
