What is 12-5-30, is it an exercise for weight loss and muscle building?

She has been flooding social media for several weeks now. The 12-5-30 method (Editor’s note, 12-3-30 in the US), popularized in 2019 by American influencer Lauren Giraldo, is now all the rage in gyms thanks to the many videos posted to TikTok and Instagram.

With summer approaching, when many people prepare their “summer body”, this exercise becomes especially popular, especially for people who do not like or do not know how to run. 12-5-30 is an uneven brisk walk performed on a treadmill. It’s called that because it involves incline on the treadmill at 12%, walking at 5 km/h, all within 30 minutes.

Please, so much, it’s because of its effectiveness, because it allows you to quickly improve and strengthen, while it is a short exercise that does not require running and is accessible to everyone. “This method is more recommended for beginners, people who are overweight, or people with joint or muscle problems, because walking avoids bumps,” says Anais Trosnel, a sports coach in Ile-de-France. “For regulars, I would rather recommend split training on the carpet, where it is more interesting to get a quick result. »

“It’s not a miracle cure”

This cardiovascular exercise is very effective because it “increases the heart rate and thus burns calories by increasing energy expenditure. In addition, setting the incline will put a lot of stress on your heart as well as on your hips and glutes, which is ideal for all those who dream of having a thinner and more muscular body, ”says an athletic trainer who wants to remind you not to hold on to a treadmill. track so as not to weaken the effect of inclination and speed.

The fitness trainer, who gives plenty of advice on his @Instanaysse Instagram account, despite everything, warns that this is an intense exercise for beginners, “because 30 minutes for someone who has never done cardio is an eternity.”

If this method has been ubiquitous in gyms for a few weeks, it is thanks to social media because it is not a revolutionary, much less a miracle method. “Now he has a name, but it has been around for many years. So far, no results have been proven without the implementation of other important points, such as a calorie deficit or suitable indoor workouts. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is not a miracle cure,” says Anais Trosnel.

For people who want a real opinion on this method, the sports coach from Val-de-Marne recommends testing it for at least a month, at least three times a week if you are a beginner and, above all, by adapting your pace at first.
