Covid-19: the mask is again mandatory in the Arcachon hospital

Back car, everything. The Hospital Center Arcachon (Gironde) announced this Thursday that the mask is once again mandatory within its walls for both staff and visitors. “I am not worried, but you must be vigilant,” the director of the hospital, Julien Rossignol, admits to us this Friday, assuring that this is “a collegiate decision taken with the doctors.”

In addition to the desire to protect patients, this measure was decided in order to “stop” the increase in sick days due to Covid among the staff. Out of a total of 800 employees, 10 caregivers are currently affected, and this number has increased in recent days, in the midst of a national recovery in the epidemic.

“Our approach is pragmatic: we want to avoid too many people being on sick leave, which would lead to the closing of hospital beds and a detrimental situation,” explains Julien Rossignol. The long weekend on August 15 traditionally leads to an influx of tourists in the South-East, which means numerous calls to the emergency room.

Maximum one visitor per room

Last year, there was no longer a national obligation to wear a mask in the hospital. The decision rests with the leadership of each school, and many centers have put an end to this in recent months. In Arcachon, Julien Rossignol makes sure that the staff “accepts and understands quite easily” this return to coercion. “People sometimes always wore a mask, especially for close care at the patient level. It’s harder for visitors and we can understand it, but we’re explaining things,” he says. Masks are also offered to them free of charge.

The other measure, perhaps more striking, is now only allowing one masked person per room, except for palliative care. This is reminiscent of the rules put in place in nursing homes at the start of the pandemic, to the dismay of some families. “There are a lot of tourists in this area, families are worried and visiting patients, but the problem is that sometimes there are four or five in the ward, and they take off the mask as soon as they are there,” Julien Rossignol justifies.

This return to a mandatory mask will be reviewed “every week”. There is no planned end date at this time.
