Shellfish and shellfish from the Arcachon basin are prohibited for consumption.

Goodbye spaghetti vongole and clam chowder, at least for now. Shellfish and molluscs from the Arcachon basin will be temporarily withdrawn from sale from Tuesday due to health risks when consumed.

The Prefecture of Gironde clarifies in a press release that tests carried out by the state with the support of Ifremer (French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea) revealed contamination with Escherichia coli bacteria.

Fishing and marketing for “human consumption” is prohibited, as is recreational fishing. Shellfish caught since last Tuesday will be removed from sale. They are not currently the subject of a “product recall” on Rappel’s website conso.gouv. Oysters from the Arcachon Basin are not affected by bacteria, but nothing is specified for mussels.

Escherichia coli bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea and sometimes fever, within 3 days of consumption.

In May, the fishing and sale of shellfish was already banned in the Arcachon basin due to a lipophilic toxin found in mussels coming from the basin.
