A 70-year-old Ugandan woman gave birth to twins at a clinic in Kampala, the capital of the East African state.
The mother, Safina Namukwaya, and the babies, a boy and a girl, are healthy and still under observation at a facility in the capital Kampala, Edward Tamale Sali said. Safina Namukwaya usually lives in rural Masaka, about 120 km west of the capital. She called Wednesday’s birth of the twins a “miracle.”
“Giving birth to twins is an extraordinary feat” for the 70-year-old mother, said the doctor who monitored her pregnancy and birth.
First birth three years ago
The septuagenarian gave birth to a daughter just three years ago after being branded a “cursed woman” for not having previously had children.
She had no children with her first husband, who died in 1992. However, her current partner, whom she met in 1996, did not come for the birth, much to her disappointment. “Maybe he is unhappy that I gave birth to twins (…), fearing the responsibility that comes with it,” she said.
