European Medicines Agency approves Moderna vaccine for booster dose

The vaccination booster may well be done with Moderna’s serum. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved on Monday the use of the vaccine to administer a booster dose, only for adults, the instance announced on its website.

Spikevax is the second booster to receive the green light after Pfizer / Biontech’s vaccine earlier this month.

“Similar” to those of the second injection

“The data showed that a third dose of Spikevax given six to eight months after the second dose resulted in increased antibody levels in adults whose antibody levels declined,” one read. According to the regulator, this booster dose carries risks “similar” to those of the second injection.

On October 6, the High Authority for Health (HAS) had recommended the use of the Pfizer vaccine for the booster, recommending to await the opinion of the European Medicines Agency before possibly using the Moderna vaccine.
