King’s Cross has been voted one of the coolest places in the world to live or visit. And yes, we’re scratching our heads too.
Certainly, London’s commuter hub has been modernized in recent years with Coal Drops Yard offering shops, restaurants and nightlife. It also has transport links from Edinburgh to Paris, several metro lines and, most importantly, a McDonald’s open until the early hours.
But world famous among the locals? Maybe, if you have £843,572 to spare: the average cost of a property for sale in King’s Cross.
Despite this, the area was crowned 24th in Time Out’s Coolest Neighborhood Awards, making it one of only three UK locations to make the list.
“King’s Cross is a great example of an area of the city that now has something to offer everyone,” says Joe Mackertich, editor of Time Out London.
‘It’s still a huge, irregular pile of rubble sticking out of the station and in a big, dirty lump across the Regent’s Canal.’
“But the side streets and squares – some full of Victorian history, others shiny and new – are now home to a wonderfully eclectic range of shops and restaurants.”
Historically, the area was not always so distinctive. It used to be rumored to be a red light district in London and not many new businesses flocked to this central location.
