T’anta Wawas in the Center of Lima: enjoy the holiday with this free event

For the celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, the National Museum of Peruvian Culture will organize the “XXV National T’anta Wawas Competition” at its headquarters in Cercado de Lima.

As part of the event, there will be an exhibition and tasting of the tanta wawas. Among the activities, there will be a demonstration of how a T’anta wawa is made and the secrets behind this art.

There will also be the workshop “Decorate T’anta wawa and take it home”, which will cost S/25 (includes materials) at the following times: 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm. Both workshops will be led by Nova Escuela.

Meanwhile, at 11:30am the qualifying jury will begin its journey to evaluate the pieces of the contest, which aims to disseminate t’anta wawas as part of popular gastronomic and artistic traditions and expand knowledge about them.

The ‘tanta wawa’ or simply called ‘wawa’ is made to offer to the deceased, a tradition that links death as a continuity of life,” highlights Marín Astocondor, director of Innovation, Research and Development of “Nova Escuela”, in a press release about the event sent to this editorial office.

Among the basic ingredients to prepare this bread are: wheat flour, fresh yeast, sourdough, water, salt, brown sugar, margarine, powdered milk, ground cinnamon, grated coconut, anise, black beer and infusion of herbs such as lemon verbena. , lemon balm or lemon verbena.

Each department has its own particularity when preparing these breads. For example, in Ayacucho you can see a wawa with very marked and fruity hints of cinnamon, and it always has a reed in the center of the body. In Arequipa and Cusco they usually put faces of children, women, animals, among others.

The activity schedule is complete, since there will also be story telling and an artistic show.
