These are the best Peruvian coffees in 2023, according to Taza de Excelencia

The 30 best coffees in Peru This year they were selected by Cup of Excellence, a competition that has been held since 2017 in the country to recognize the work of the most outstanding coffee growers and the quality of the Peruvian grain. A jury made up of 21 international and national tasters was in charge of the final selection of the best coffees that come from six producing regions.

First place went to Yoniser Mego Silva, whose coffee won over 302 other samples that participated in the competition, whose evaluations began in the month of August. The 33-year-old producer entered this contest with a Geisha variety coffee, which for some years has stood out as one of the most successful in specialty coffee competitions held in other producing countries. Another 21 coffee farmers also chose this variety.

Cusco and Cajamarca are the regions with the most coffees in the top 30 list, with 10 winners each. Junín, Amazonas and Puno appear with three coffees for each region, and Huancavelica with one.

Among the coffee growers recognized this year are 2022 winners, such as Julio César Chávez Nieve (Cusco), who last year took second place in the competition, as well as Hortencia Victoria Berrocal Mendoza, a tenacious coffee grower who placed in the 2022 edition in fifth place. She plants her coffee above 2,200 meters above sea level in the province of Tayacaja, in the Huancavelica region.

Also standing out in 9th place this year is Dwight Aguilar (Cusco), who has won the Cup of Excellence in 2018 and 2021, thus becoming the first two-time champion coffee grower of this competition in the country.

Yoniser Mego Silva

Partner producer of the Cenfrocafé Agrarian Coffee Cooperative. He won the 2023 Cup of Excellence with a Geisha variety coffee that he grows on his Alto Mirador farm, located in the La Victoria town center, Jaén district, Jaén province, in the Cajamarca region, 1,990 meters above sea level. His coffee achieved 90.74 points in a cup.

Franco Huaches Montalvan

He is an independent coffee farmer. He achieved the second best Peruvian coffee with a Geisha coffee that he grows on his La Lucuma farm in the Chirinos town center, Chirinos district, San Ignacio province, Cajamarca region, at 1850 meters above sea level. His coffee obtained 90.68 points in a cup.

Edwin Quea Pacco

He is an outstanding taster of specialty coffees and entered this competition on behalf of the Origin Coffee Company. He occupies third place on the podium of the best coffee producers. He entered the competition with a Geisha variety coffee that he grows on the Chiriloma farm located in the Chirumbia-Alto San Martín town center, in the Quellouno district, province of La Convencion, Cusco, at 1950 meters above sea level. His coffee had 90.32 points in the cup.

Abel Raymundo Arotaype Huayllas

This independent coffee grower also presented a Geisha variety coffee that he produces on his Pedregal farm, which is located in the Lucuypata town center of the Inkawasi district, La Convencion province, in Cusco, at 2,240 meters above sea level. His coffee added 90.15 points in the cup.
