When it comes to vacationing in Europe, it’s easy to fall into the trap of booking short-haul flights with the best providers in the world.
However, if you’re looking for a destination a little off the beaten track, a certain Eastern European country is becoming increasingly popular.
With only around 750,000 foreign tourists in 2019, North Macedonia is truly an underrated gem – nestled between Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania.
But it’s not just the country’s undiscovered appeal that has captured the hearts of tourists; Visitors were also impressed by the picturesque offerings.
A recent TripAdvisor reviewer named @jordanellie41 described Lake Matka in North Macedonia as “nature at its best.” Really high praise.
It is also clear that North Macedonia is quickly becoming a popular destination for 2024.
Laura Lindsay, destination and trends expert at Skyscanner, told Metro: “We have seen a strong increase in bookings to North Macedonia recently, with the capital Skopje in our top 10 most popular destinations.” We have seen a 10% increase in flight bookings from the UK over the last 12 months.”
Laura continues: “Eastern Europe is beautiful and it is no surprise that holidays here are often seen on social media as a ‘duplicate’ of expensive southern European destinations.”
“Kitsch, over-the-top, with brutalist architecture, hundreds of gigantic statues in classical style and one of the largest bazaars in Europe – Skopje is a bit like Las Vegas and a bit like Istanbul.”
“The capital of North Macedonia is one of the most absurd cities in Europe and, despite its many follies, a place full of surprises.” Moreover, this part of Europe is very affordable and less touristy than some southern European places.
“For those looking for a quirky, cheap and less crowded twist on a place like Italy, North Macedonia is the place to be.”
Not to mention the low cost, flights from London to Skopje start from £44 return.
Inspired to book a break? You better hurry, because TikTok data shows that North Macedonia (+733%) – along with Albania (+233%) and Montenegro (+123%) – have all seen significant increases in interest over the past twelve months seen
