“You will close it”: the majority wants sanctions against MP Olivier Serva

Renaissance deputies will demand sanctions against Olivier Serva, deputy of the Lyot group (Freedoms, Independent, Overseas Territories and Territories) after a chaotic and tense end to the session on Thursday. “You are going to close it,” the elected representative of Guadeloupe said to the Renaissance deputies who challenged him during his intervention.

The group’s president, Aurora Bergé, will demand sanctions against the MP at next Tuesday’s conference of Presidents of the Assembly, her group said, confirming the information from Figaro.

On this electric day, dedicated to the proposals of the La France insoumise group, MPs voted for the first time to include the right to abortion in the Constitution. They then considered a bill to reintegrate caregivers not vaccinated against Covid-19 to overcome staffing shortages, a sensitive issue in France, especially abroad.

Most obstruction

With the support of the LR and RN deputies, the LFI proposal seemed to be accepted. But with the suspension of meetings and the introduction of amendments, the presidential camp compromised the conduct of the vote, drawing the ire of the opposition and elected officials from abroad. Olivier Serva, who denounced the methods used to slow down the debate, then criticized the “petty gimmicks”. “You are smearing democracy with your meanness, you are in the minority, accept it,” he said.

Accusations between the majority and the small centrist group are not common, Emmanuel Macron even addressed the group as well as LR in October, wishing for an “union”.

The Assembly’s rules of procedure stipulate that its members may be subject to disciplinary action in the event of disruptive demonstrations or in the event of “insults, provocations or threats”. Sanctions range from a call to order to censorship with a temporary exemption.
