Action plan for justice: Eric Dupont-Moretti wants more work to be done in prison

Eric Dupont-Moretti did not come empty-handed to the set of “BFM Politique” in partnership with Le Parisien-Today in France this Sunday. In front of him on the table are two criminal codes, one from 1959, the other from 2023.

The Keeper of the Seals is waving them in the middle of the program to illustrate the need to simplify the CPC: “I put them in profile so that we can correctly measure the difference in thickness,” he explains, showing in fact that the 1950s edition is very thin in comparison with the 2023 edition. “We want to rewrite it, simplify it, make it a tool for professionals,” says the Minister of Justice.

This project is one of the (many) priorities of his equity action plan released on Thursday, January 4th. The sixty measures, welcomed – once out of the ordinary – rather positively by trade unions, breathed new life into a breathless judiciary.

Thus, the Minister has a “wishes” that “the duration of procedures should be halved by the end of the five-year term.” To this end, Eric du Pont Moretti confirmed his intention to hire 1,500 justices of the peace and 1,500 clerks by 2027. And this is even though it takes thirty-one months to train a magistrate. “Today there are seven ways to become a magistrate, we will simplify to allow other professions to become magistrates, including lawyers,” the minister clarifies.

The latter also announced that he was going to launch “a serious prison employment policy in the coming weeks.” And provide: “More work in prison, more reintegration. »
