May 1 violence: police unions demand ‘decisive gestures’ in letter to Emmanuel Macron

“Fear must cross over to the other side.” In a joint letter to Emmanuel Macron, the four major police unions, with the exception of UNSA, called for a series of “decisive action” and a meeting with the head of state to stop violence against security forces after May Day.

“The police house is on fire (…) Should we wait until one of ours is killed by one of these criminals? The trade union bloc will never accept this. It’s time to sign the end of impunity! “Warn Alliance, Synergies Officiers, Snipat and SICP in a letter signed by their respective presidents. Note the lack of a large UNSA union, mainly for “union kitchen” reasons, not the substance of the demands.

To this end, police unions are calling for “decisive action” by the President of the Republic. “Without a decisive gesture, we will consider the absence of protective measures taken in support of the police as carte blanche in favor of all criminals, all thugs,” the four institutions say. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on the day of mobilization on May 1, 406 policemen and gendarmes were injured.

Among these measures we find “strong, swift criminal response with minimal punishment for offenders”, “establishment as a separate offense of inciting hatred or committing a crime or offense against the police”, a new “anti-burglar”, or even the use of drones “for preventive and judicial purposes” .

Regarding their wage demands, the four unions are demanding a reassessment of “a specific hardship allowance for all active police forces up to 35%”, as well as “the removal of the 1/5 bonus ceiling and the creation of a ‘sixth year'”. bonuses.”

To discuss these proposals and violence against the police, four trade union organizations “urgently” request a meeting with the president. The head of state has not yet responded to this invitation.
