Saint-Breven: Prefect of the Pays-de-la-Loire accepts the resignation of Mayor Yannick Maures

The resignation of the mayor of Saint-Breven-les-Pins is becoming more and more obvious. According to the newspaper Ouest-France, the prefect of the Loire-Atlantique, Fabrice Rigoulet-Rose, accepted the resignation of Yannick Mores. Official mail should arrive this Wednesday. The elected official will be able to formally terminate his powers upon receipt of the letter.

His first deputy, Dorothy Paco, will become acting mayor. But Yannick Morez will still serve as municipal councilor until the organization of the next municipal council on 9 June. Having become a symbol of the city councilmen who have been victims of violence, the mayor of Saint-Brevin confirmed his decision to resign after he was threatened by many from the far right after announcing the transfer of a reception center for asylum seekers (Cada) near a school in his city .

The elected official was particularly affected by the burning of his house on 22 March. He immediately denounced the “flagrant” lack of government support. The minister of the interior, Gérald Darmanin, claimed that the gendarmerie and the prefect’s assistant went to him. “Maybe we weren’t there enough to protect the elected officials,” he agreed, however.

Increasing acts of violence against elected officials

Following the announcement of this resignation, the Minister of the Territorial Communities, Dominic Faure, announced the reconciliation of penalties for attacks against elected officials with those for attacks against members of the armed forces. It is obvious that these sentences will increase from 3 to 7 years in prison and from 75,000 to 100,000 euros in fines, and these changes should be included in the policy bill on justice. In 2022, the number of acts of physical or verbal violence against elected officials increased by 32%, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
