Next step? Following the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution, LFI parliamentary leader Matilda Pano announced on Monday that she would table a text directing the government to include the right in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
“We are going to celebrate a historic victory and tomorrow we will go into battle again,” the lawmaker told reporters, visibly moved by the vote of 780 parliamentarians gathered at Versailles to include a “guaranteed freedom” to have an abortion in the Constitution.

Matilda Pano has already presented to the Assembly the first text on the constitutionalization of abortion, adopted by deputies.
The proposed resolution, which would be non-binding if passed, calls on the government to “mobilize diplomatically with Union member states and the European Commission to ensure that the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights guarantees the right to abortion.”
Environmentalist Senator Melanie Vogel, a vocal advocate for the constitutionalization of abortion, also called for the right to be brought to the European level and included in the Charter of Fundamental Rights after the Congress vote. The proposal was also supported by socialist senators.
