Corsica: why, despite the agreement, the path to autonomy is still long

It has been almost two years since Gérald Darmanin spoke with Corsica’s elected representatives to discuss their request for constitutional reform to grant the island autonomous status. Two years during which antagonistic positions were often expressed within the Corsica Territorial Assembly, to the point of questioning their ability to reach an agreement on this project.

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, after an almost five-hour meeting at the Ministry of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin welcomed the completion of the “Bovo process”. A mission whose purpose was to promote precisely these antagonistic positions “within the framework established by the President of the Republic.” On September 28, Emmanuel Macron called on Corsica to formally adopt a Constitution “to recognize Corsican history, culture and characteristics.” He was not against the recognition of autonomy, which would be “not against the state and without it, but for Corsica, in a republic.”
